John is a big fan of the Star Wars series. The original movie was released in 1977, and he remembers going to the theatre to see it. (I suspect he still has a crush on Princess Leia.)
Statistics Canada has just released data from the 2011 National Household Survey which shows that the number of people in Canada claiming to be JEDI Knights has dropped dramatically. Jediism is an actual religion – practiced by members of the Order of the Jedi. They study philosophies similar to Buddhism and Daoism – and view the films as inspiration. In 2001 Jediism had close to 20,000 Canadian followers – now down to about 9,000.
Episode Vll of Stars Wars is slated to be released by Disney in 2015, so movie executives have two years to market the brand again. Disney will be aiming to convert a new generation Jedi Knights. I wonder if the 11,000 ex-Order of the Jedi will rejoin their church – or have they found a new saviour to worship?
My money is on Katniss Everdeen – from the Hunger Games.
